Stop Motion Techniques
Pixilation is a technique used for stop motion, it consists of live actors moving frame by frame in an animation film, posing repeatedly while one or more frames are being taken and changing each pose before the next frame. So therefore it gives of a vibe of the actor becoming some sort of stop motion puppet. The technique is often used to illustrate a way of the actors to blend in with the animated characters within the film or TV programme. A early example of pixilation, is a french film called Jobard ne peut pas voir les femmes travailler (jobard could not see the women working) which was made in 1911 it was the first pixilation ever to be made. Another example is sergeant swell of the mounties, it is a 1972 pixilation spoof of Sergaent Preston of the Yukon. Its about romp across the great Northwest in which Sergeant Swell of the Mounties (riding imaginary horses) repeatedly rescues Emmy Lou and runs afoul of a trio of unlikely Indians in a spoof of old Western movies. Another example is Space Jam that was made in 1996, an american live action/animation family sports comedy, it consist of the Looney Tunes Character, Bugs Bunny. and mixing the live character with the animation, it was the fastest - selling home entertainment subject as sales reached $100 million.

PIXILATION EXAMPLES
Claymation, better known as Clay animation is one form of stop motion using clay, the term Claymation was created by Will Vinton. This type of stop motion involves using clay objects and/or characters that have been moulded, and then a series of still pictures have been taken, and the position of the sculpted characters is altered slightly in every still photo, or frame and then replayed in rapid succession to create the illusion of movement. An example is The Cameraman's Revenge it was made in 1912 by Ladislaw Starewicz, it consisted of beetles, grasshoppers, and dragonflys. It was Satrewicz first animated film made. The plot was about a grasshopper (cameraman) taking revenge by filming Mr. Beetle and his mistress Miss. Dragonfly and shows it in a local cinema when Miss. Dragonfly is in the audience. Another example is Peanut Vendor made in 1933 by Len Lye, it is a clay puppet who sings and a palm tree is moving along with the singing. The last example is Wallace and Gromit and the curse of the ware rabbit it is a claymation family comedy, the story is that wallace and gromit they come to the rescue of the residents of a village which is being plagued by a mutated rabbit before the annual vegetable competition.

EXAMPLES OF CLAYMATION
Cut out animation is a form of animation using paper and other type of materials to create flat characters, props and backgrounds to produce a film. This technique was the used for the worlds earliest feature films. Now days however cut out animations are produced on computers, either with scanned images or vector graphics. An example of earlier cut animation is 'The Adventure of Prince Achmed' this was made in 1926 it features the silhoutte animation technique which involves manipulated cutouts made with cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera. This film considers a handsome prince rides a flying horse to faraway land and embarks on a magical adventure which includes a befriending a witch, meeting Aladdin and falling in love with a princess. Another example is Krabat - The Sorcerers Apprentice' it was made in 1978 it is a cutout animated dark fantasy made by Karel Zeman. The plot is about a begger boy in the 18th Century who is entice to become an apprentice to an evil, one eyed apprentice, his joined by other boys who learn black magic and turning into a raven and other animals. Another example is Charlie and Lola TV series that was made in 2005, the animation that they characters are made from is a college style of animation, 2D cel animation, paper cutout, fabric design, real textures, photomontage, and archive footage are all involved within making the show.

Model/Object stop motion is a technique of stop motion which consists of only objects such as toys, blocks, dolls, etc, that are non drawn objects. Model/Object stop motion also doesnt involve clay or wax objects, as this technique is designed to look like a recognisable human or animal character. An early example of model/object stopmotion is 'The New Gulliver' it is a Soviet stopmotion animation that was made in 1935, it was the first exclusive film to of used puppet animation. The plot is about a young boy who dreams himself as a version of Gulliver who has landed in Lilliput suffering under capitalist inequality and exploitation, it is the re telling of 'Gullivers Travels.' Another example is 'Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town' it was a 1970 stop motion television special, the plot is about how Santa and several Claus - related Christmas traditions came to be. The whole of characters and settings were made from wood and plastic and animated one frame at a time. Another example is 'Desmond & the Swamp Barbarian Trap' is a swedish stop animation that was made in 2006. It consist of a pig called Desmond and his friends who think they are haunted by the terrible monster Traskpatraske, who thinks they took evil willies guitar, Sebastian Hare's boxing gloves and Bittan Cow's stock of makeup, however they don't believe he exists but who else could it be.

REVIEWING MY STOP MOTION - IPHONE APP (STOP MOTION)
The composition in my animation I think
works well as it fits the camera space perfectly, even though there is a little
extra space on the left side of the animation it somehow works well as it is a
distraction, but the way the animation is positioned is on the right side, it
moves throughout and by the end of the animation the character is straight and
in the positioned in the middle. The lighting its natural lighting, at the
start of the animation its high key, with less shadows but then at the end my
finger gets in the way and creates a shadow, however you can still see and know
what’s going on. The expressions on the animation, I think work well, however I
think I should of put more emotions into the animation as I think it would of
looked a little better and more exciting. However the emotions tell and create
a story. The whole making of the emotions, the cutting out in the animation I
think with the green eyes, I think I cut them to small so it didn’t position
very well on the face compared the other parts of the face. However the other
expressions such as the eyes the cutting out went well as they fit and looked
right placed on the paper head. The frames per second in animation were too
quick I had it on for 5fps, which made it jolt and not as smooth as if I
decreased the frames per second. The whole animation is way to fast so it isn’t
that clear of what you knows going on, the movement between shots because I
kept moving to change the emotions things that I wanted to not change kept
moving so it was hard to keep everything secure and not move, which also made
the animation jolt. The steadiness of the whole animation was joggled because
we used an Iphone, there is no support on keeping it still, especially when you
have to move the cutout to make it what you want it to look like. However the
app we used ‘Stopmotion’ had onion layers so it made it easier so that when you
looked back on it you could see it has a stop motion animation rather then
flicking through photos and not getting the same effect. The technique of cut
animation, when attempting the process, realized you have to have a lot of
patients and good creativity with cutting out and making shapes and characters.
However Its good as you can make something your own and produce a character
easily with different fabrics and papers.

Production Log..
Friday 13th January - Today we were completing paperwork and our proposal so that we can be more organised throughout our production.
Monday 16th January - Today we were creating our characters and set for our test footage to see overall how the animation would work. We come up with a few problems such as when we cut put the paper the paper curved so when we placed it on to the set it was all curved and you couldn't really see it. Also another problem was the size of the set it was to small for all our characters to put, it was a squeeze so it maybe hard to move when we do our test footage. To stop these problems from happen we are planning to stick down the earth and moon because throughout the animation they aren't going to move. We are also going to stick down the set background to so that doesn't move around.
Thursday 19th January - We began to film our test footage, we only filmed one scene just to see what it has turn out like. When in the middle of making the footage we decided that the set even though it is cut out that instead of colouring the background in we will get a total black A1 piece of paper so it looks as if its better quality, also for the characters and props to stand out more. When we completed the footage we uploaded it to final cut and we were messing around with the speed in which it should go. We tried three that are down below.

When we completed the footage we uploaded it to final cut and we were messing around with the speed in which it should go. We tried three that are down below.
|
Thursday 19th- We began our test footage uploaded to final cut and for this clip we tried 25fps which was way to fast for us to even see whats was happening. Also the lighting is awful but we are planning to use artificial lighting to make it perfect. Also we kept moving the camera so the shots are dodgy.
|
|
Thursday 19th - We then tried 8fps which was way to slow and it was very jumpy which is not what we want for this animation. Also with it being 8fps when looking closely it stopped has it was about to dodge the earth which is also not what we want. Also again the lighting is dodgy too.
|
|
Thursday 19th - We also tried 6fps knowing it will obviously be slow but we decided to test it on 6 just to take a look. Its way to slow and very jumpy.
The posistive thing about doing the test footage is that the expressions on the moon worked well the Earth has the same expression throughout which it seems to made a dangerous presence of the comet less effective to the audience. Also we decided that all the fps we have done are either to fast or slow so we tries 24 fps and that seems great the right speed. We have just to work on the set and characters . |
Monday 23rd January - I finished off the sounding script for our animation.
Tuesday 24th January - We finished the dialogue script for our animation. And uploaded paperwork onto my website.
Monday 30th January - We began making our set and characters that we are going to use in our animation. We decided with props and characters that aren't moving we stick them down because that is the big problem. Also because throughout the animation there are going to different expressions so we have to draw separately the moon with different emotions so we have to make sure they are the right size for continuity issues.
Monday 6th February - Today we have nearly finished making the characters and the props, we still need to make the set. The problems that occurred today are that the characters still keep bending, i think because we left them for a few days we didn't put them in a safe place, so we have put them into a plastic folder so that if anything goes on top of it they dont bend, also they dont get lost either because there not scatted all over the place.
Tuesday 7th February - today we was planning our camerawork and how we are going to show, we thought about different camera shots but a still camera medium shot was the best option because that means we wouldn't need to move the set and move the camera and it be as good as if we used different shots.
Friday 10th February - Today we were sorting out the lighting for our animation. Problems come up because we placed our animation on the floor to film, the were loads of shadows and it just didn't really work out. So an idea we thought of was to only have natural light and 1 artificial light.
Monday 20th February - With the lighting not really working we decided to without having natural light and only 1 artificial light and it worked perfectly.
Monday 29th February - We finished off some of our characters, so that they are not any white bits of paper so that its all coloured in.
Thursday 1st March - We showed the class our test footage and we got some feedback majority of it was positive saying the movement was great and the expression on the moon was great. The negative comments were the set, but we are going to change the set like i said early.
Friday 2nd March - We filmed our animation today. Overall the things that went positively was the set it started in one place all the way through. Also the expressions on the facts turend out good also. The negative things that happened were the camera at the start it was out and focus but we only found out a few shots in so we had to start again. Another negative was we kept moving the moving characters way to far from each time they stopped so it was jumpy. But overall i thought it went well.
Monday 5th March - We uploaded the footage onto final cut and change the speed to 24fps. Once getting it in order and the right length. We focused on the soundtrack and because we planned before of what we were going to have and were to find it it was easy. The problems we had with the editing was getting the footage in the right place and connected it so that it was smooth enough. Also a negative was syncing the sound effects and track with the animation some of the shots were to quick or to long for a sound effect or track. However we managed to get it syncing or working so overall was great.
Tuesday 24th January - We finished the dialogue script for our animation. And uploaded paperwork onto my website.

When finishing my animation i sent out a few questionnaires to groups of people and i showed my animation to a few people. The questions i asked were about genre, narrative, lighting and animation techniques. The genre for my animation was a sci fi space 'invasion' genre, and to make that clear i used the mise en scene space stereotype background to get my point and to make sure the audience understand, also using the earth and moon and the comet to also show the stereotype space. We also used these characters just to show the mis en scene of documentary shows that are out there like 'The Comets Tale shown on BBC One. The feedback i got from the genre question was understandable everyone knew being successful with a percentage of 100. We used many styles in our animation to try and connect to the audience, the styles that were in there were comedy, action, and emotions within the characters, for example when the comet was coming towards the earth the earth was sweating with worry which makes the audience feel maybe uneasy. Comedy was the man walking and to try and save himself he uses an umbrella - a object that saves you from nothing especially a comet, also its overdramatic and exaggerated. The action used is all of it, there is always some sort of action going on which excites the audience and keeps them on there toes. This then comes over to the target audience our target audience we want to attract are unisex geeks who have a sense of humour just so that its targeted at teenagers and it isn't so dark that they feel uneasy or they are not enjoying. For example 'Our Solar System' animation which is uninteresting explaining the planets which fair enough it may attract people but we wanted to like the younger teenagers to get involved so we added comedy.
However we want our audience to of course like it but also remember it because of the comedy. I wanted the audience to really connect and be emotional with the characters, for example when the man notices the comet coming he panics i wanted the audience to have the same feeling. However like ai said emotions with comedy is a great way to attract your audience , for example in wallace and gromit it bright comedy and happiness but then in the film the characters think wallace is dead and then the audience start to believe it and start to feel something.
The narrative of my animation consists around the genre of a comet trying to hit the earth but misses. We didn't want it to be really long because we wanted to end up with an affect that everyone would want to keep watching because its different compared to other space and comet shows like 'Space Mysteries.' Space related shows are documentary they never lie, and thats where we are the complete opposite because if a comet was coming towards earth it would hit it and it wouldn't turn and miss. The way we show the characters because they have emotions and 'feelings' so we tried and make it them human as possible. The comet the face we wanted a mean eyebrows down, pointy eye look emotion to show the audience that he is mean that he is about to destroy everything. The other characters like the moon, the changing of expressions of worries and scariness but also braveness and he knows he has to stick it out.
In our questionnaire we spoke about the soundtrack and what the audience thought about the soundtrack used, and if it was all synced and wasn't out of time. The feedback that we received was that they enjoyed the soundtrack they liked the open soundtrack they thought that it worked well with the sunrise and the man walking calmly they said it was 'emotionally correct' and 'made them smile.' We chose this soundtrack to be over the top and to start the animation with a peaceful calm way, and with it being normal stereotypically way something bad will happen. For example 'Forbidden Planet' they fly to the moon but then crashes and there is a disaster. The voiceover the feedback we got from that was positive there were comments 'funny' and they liked the fact that 'there mouths actually looked like it was saying the letters as well as the words.'
The lighting throughout the animation was great in the end. We wanted the constant high key lighting, when we got feedback they mentioned when the comet is coming towards the earth that it has shadow around which gave it a more 'realism' and 'affection' which they really liked. Also with the moon shadow they liked the fact that it felt 'cold' and 'normal' it didn't look fake. Majority of my animation was diegetic sounding but when the earth spoke it was non diegetic, also when the man whistling that was non diegetic but you couldn't see it because we made his head to small so we could make lips and move it around. We decided to voiceover the moon and the earth because with real human voices its more realistic towards the audiences and it shows awareness for the audience that this type of action will happen. Also the reason we put the comet sound effect in was because firstly, to make it realistic but most important that there is constant noise in the background otherwise the animation will have just no sound and it want be as good. We used the soundtrack to the 'Morning' by Grieg to show that it was a brand new day and to show effect that at this point in the animation everything was perfect until... We decided to only have one soundtrack because the focus of the animation was the comet missing the earth so we wanted more of the comet noises instead of others that may be distracting. The reason we used a still camera shot throughout was because with the technique we were using which as cut out its was difficult to use different shot types at different angles because the angles were flat and you couldn't see any of the action. However we panned alittle towards the end this was because we wanted to show both characters affects towards the comet missing, so when zooming into the earth blinking we then wanted the moon in shot so we panned upwards so that it was easy to see and so that the audience could see the affect. We wanted to keep it simple shot wise because cut animation is very basic animation so we wanted to keep it basic but interesting. The sound effects of the blinking and the relief of the earth and moon, i thought worked well because it shows all emotion and affection of the characters and the audience because they can connect well with it because they have witnessed it. With the technique that we used it had to be colourful because it was very basic, the drawings worked well i thought because there was a good use of different colours, but also using appropriate colours for each character and prop to make it seem more realistic and more interesting. Also it shows that effect of cut out animation, the movement, the way its drawn and colour. In my questionnaire i asked about the movement weather it was jumpy or smooth, the whole animation i decided to go with 24fps, the answers i got back 98% said it was smooth but the 2% said that it was jumpy, however this is the result i thought id get because the animation is cut out the movement is limited for example when the man is walking he is just move up and down his legs are not moving, but personally i thought it worked well because it be 10x times as difficult if i was trying to move the legs because they are made from paper.
The target audience for my animation are teenagers, male geeks because majority of this type of genre attracts males stereotypically males enjoy space and action and interest in plants and comets. The fact that it is teenagers is because it a learning curve for younger kids and kids that are interest want to know more. Our influences are aimed in documentaries about earth and comets which is also aimed at older people which they can relate to our animation and have some kind of nostalgia effect of when they learned this type of stuff back and school, also that they are still learning because something new always crops up. Going back to the emotions on the characters our younger viewers can relate because its basic and interesting to them because they we use emotions to get out point cross for the whole animation and they can understand how the earth would feel and also the moon and they can discuss it with friends about how they felt about it and have a connection with us.
