PAPER WORK - ESSAYS.
MY TV IDENT PROPOSAL
The channel I’ve chosen to base my Ident on is E4, the brand identity; firstly e4 was launched in 2001, it is a purple with white patch e4 its target audience attracts 16 – 34 year old audiences, niche audience. It appeals to ‘’cool’’- retro, brick lance ‘‘indie cool’’ audience. Its attracts the type because there idents show randomness, quirky in a sense that its makes you feel happy, its retro, in a sense that the use of music and ‘’chilling’’ expression that it comes across. Its shows the arty side, for example E4 hotel room, theres purple paint coming out from the cupboards there is a octopus that grabs a teddy. This symbolizes ‘modern’ art of technology and it brings out and symbolizes new generation of viewers it also to bring in more viewers that are arty and retro. Also with E4 idents, especially the idents made in 2007, there idents were very busy, so therefore viewers would watch it maybe for a 2/3rd time and not see something that that hadn’t seen the first time making it more interesting and a challenge in what e4 actually telling the audience. The logo its self is well recognized, once you see it, your bound to see it again and recognize what that type of logo is. Its neutral in away that it has different colours that aren’t said to be sexist. The use of purple symbolizes ‘royal.’ ‘Wealthy’ background in which e4 have, so they try and get a point across that with our ‘wealthy’ logo there have the best shows and one of the best channels. The programmes that e4 shows are comedy, drama, and reality life. E4 show talent show their audience that they know how to impress this generation and with comedy like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ this shows education in a comedy so therefore sort of hiding education with comedy. E4 mission statement, firstly E4 was launched so that the audience could watch programmes before there were shown on channel 4. There statement is ‘people could see it before there friends.’ This is saying that people are able to watch programmes and be able to talk about it the next day with friends, so in a way its like a competition of who’s seen that programme first.
My inspirations that helped me think of ideas and how to present my ideas. Firstly is a man called Banksy his drawings and the way he presents himself in his drawings inspire me because he uses emotions and never thought ideas, for example the painting of the Buddha injured shows some sort of sign like religion is not recognized or not dwelled upon as much as it should. It shows courage and thoughtfulness within his drawings. My other inspirations is Film4 ident this is an inspiration because its shows a full shot of two cars and then the screen splits into 4 different screens, however the action is still happening within the screens, the screen shows different angles in which the car crashes, so its inspiring because its clear and it shows every little detail, just like in films. Films show every little detail for viewers to understand. Logos that inspire me are the apple mac logo, its simple, it shows what its all about. Its bright with the black background the apple really stands out, also when people see it, there will remember the logo because the way its laid out and the way the apple is drawn, its not to big and not to small. The moving images that inspire me Is the harry potter movie, its inspires me because once the theme tune of harry potter comes on it elaborates straight away that people know that its harry potter or to with harry potter. Also the action with the trailer inspires me because there is a use of editing to all the good action within the film which then its overlaid over the soundtrack which enhances and engages the audience.
I called my first idea ‘Runover E4,’ it consisted of an E4 logo getting hit by a car on a Suburban Street, and splattering on the windscreen, which the viewers would see as their television screen. I would have shot the car with live footage, and dubbed the E4 graphic in Flash afterwards. I liked the idea as it kept within the theme that E4 use for idents, with randomness and by mixing live footage with animation like the E4 band playing ident. This ident would appeal to E4’s target audience of 15-25 year olds by personalising the E4 logo and giving it a character so therefore making the target audience engaged and involved in how the e4 logo looks.
My second concept I called ‘Knock on E4,’ the whole idea evolves around a game centre in which the E4 logo’s and purple blobs replace the oranges, lemons and cherries on a fruit machine, it’s an old fashion type in which you pull the lever down to gamble, as the lever is pulled by an anonymous hand, the E4’s bump into the purple blobs with a bell like sound coming in and transforming them into E4’s. So by the end, the fruit machine has only E4 logo’s on display. I would have shot this in live footage, again adding the E4’s using Flash and Final Cut. This ident would shown the fun side of E4 and set in a lively environment creating a hype within the ident..
My third idea is called ‘E4 House Party’ and it starts with a animated E4 logo hopping down a corridor with lots of brown doors and a faint beat of house music, it reaches the only purple door and the music appears louder, the logo knocks and the door swings open, the music volume increases, the shot cuts to be inside the room watching the logo walk in then the camera zooms out and the viewer can then see that it’s a room full of E4 logos, representing some sort of party. I would have used flash for the whole ident because the idea would have to be completely animated to work how I wanted it. It shows ‘’good times’ E4 which represent E4’s programmes.
So after considering my ideas carefully, I came to the decision to use my final idea which was called ‘arts of E4.’ It’s a simple concept, and leaning away from the other idea’s in that it’s not an animation. It’s a live shot of an artists hand drawing and colouring in the E4 logo, I predict it will take about fifteen minutes, but plan to fast forward the footage to cut it down to roughly 30 seconds, as no one would what to sit through a 15 minute ident. The software that I’m going to use is live footage, I’ve chose to do this ident in live footage because I like the retro look that it gives, its shows real time, and it also I think would appeal to the arty side of the E4 audience. I’m targeting this kind of audience because E4 encourage creativity through their competitions and support of new talent, for example ‘Great British hairdresser.’

Purpose and Design of TV Idents.
The purpose of an TV Ident is to brand a channel and to make it its own and to identify the channel. Starting of by marketing and promoting the channel with a design logo to make that colourful but as plain as possible so that the viewers remember it and catches there eye. With the logo the TV Channel has to have a specific audience that they want to target so they have to be specific about how they go about making the ident starting off with the soundtrack weather the TV Channel wants to attract humour into there shows, this also has to show in the ident itself. Weather the ident wants to be animated or real life to mark the shows there are screening. Also weather the ident wants to be busy or not so much so that it attracts the viewers eyes more. Also in the ident how much information does the channel what to spill for the audience so that the audience what to watch more of the channel because they don't know what type of ident the channel is going to represent. Also with the ident do the channel want a slow tempo or fast tempo to identify there channel. These types of designs is what channels think about when designing a ident. Also the purpose is informing the audiences of whats coming up next filling in the gaps and taking it time so that the ident is in the viewers heads so that they can remember it. Using segmentations (breaking up programming) to keep the audiences interested and therefore they keep watching. Also to let the audience know that every so often the channel re brands to keep up with the identity of the ident and the target audience but particular with technology as the quickly changes throughout years.
The settings that E4 uses is animation software to identify there channel and for BBC One they use live footage in their ident.
The colour and lighting in the E4 it is high key (unnatural) because its animation, so therefore its been edited in. However BBC one is filmed live so therefore the lighting is natural meaning it is high key so therefore its dark and shadowy and this is because it is shot at night so its going to have a dark setting, it also makes it look more realistic. It somewhat manipulates them into thinking its real and that its happening now as they are watching it because this type of ident only comes on the screen and night when it is dark so for the viewers they believe that, that ident as happened. They also use as little light as possible to bring in effect and realism by using the 'light' which is meant to be coming from the 'moon' that they are making. They’ve chose this kind of effect to make the ident stand out and to make it more established.
The props used for the BBC One Ident are real life props such as the motorbikes, the prop there use for the 'moon' is one big light that isn’t natural and isn’t real but the audience see it as real and are manipulated as seeing its real. The soundtrack also helps the manipulation because its peaceful and calm which at night while audiences are watching the TV there want that kind of mood so that they feel it too.
E4 do not show facial expressions because its an animation and this type of ident only show props and the purple clay coming out of the draws. However there is a sense of warmth and welcoming to the ident as it shows a room that looks like it has been lived in, the use of the teddy also shows character and understanding of who E4 are trying to target, which is teenagers and young adults and the teddy is a symbol of teenagers and young adults. The facial expressions on the BBC One ident at the start shows seriousness and concentration then later on in the ident we found out what they are doing and the ident becomes more laid back and more fun. The narrative in the E4 ident shows a comedy aspect due to the fact that it is entertaining with lots going on all at once and the fact that it is quirky and different to most idents which are live or of living things and objects. In the BBC ident the narrative is different in a sense that it shows a completely new setup and theme towards the audience compared the E4. The camera shots and angles in the e4 ident pans and zooms in on the action so the audience know what they’re watching. In the BBC ident there are shots taking showing feelings and purpose in shots, for example the guy putting the moon together the shot there is a purpose and it looks mean full to the man. The editing used in E4 ident show by using animation that wasn’t already there, so special effects. For example, when the purple long octopus arms grab the teddy, the editing is the fact used special effects to make it different and to produce something that e4 are trying to target. With the BBC ident there is editing techniques such as fades to be able to make the moon, also use of special effects which make it look more professional then the E4 ident because there is a lot more editing techniques like the fading of the people putting the moon together. The soundtrack for E4 is circus like soundtrack hence the comedy in the channel itself and the identity of the ident. For the BBC ident the soundtrack is more serious and dwelling because its more targeting older generations and its not only targeting teenagers.
Another idents such as the BBC Three and Fiver, there are different in the way E4 and BBC one present theirs because BBC three show there ident as everyday life and reality, which E4 don’t relate to, as they show comedy and randomness on their channel on purpose to gain there viewers. The fiver ident show the different parts of the world and different places to show that their programmes have a purpose of showing travelling shows and dramas. The logo of bbc three l uses the ‘sexiest’ as it is pink and refers to women and that it is a women’s tv channel. Hence the shows like 'Snog, Marry, Avoid, or Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents. The humour in which BBC three gives is humour of others and having reality shows in the channel the audience can share humour with the reality programme because they may of experienced it or just like the take the mick out of others. BBC One shows humour by having different idents like the hippo ident or the dog ident, something that is different to any other channel that bring in a different audience. Fiver logo is colourful, like streetlights very bright; it isn’t animated, so straight away the viewers get a sense of realism in the shows and the colourful logo shows that the dhow that are screening are real but also fun and enjoyable. E4 however use animation to target there audience of the retro look, there logo is colourful but simple and a good size to remember when seeing it again which it want you want to see from a ident colourful and simple is a good way to get the ident into people heads and for them to remember it. The ident in fiver is quick paste as if the ident is a person e.g train station its panning about trying to make a journey and its maniplating the audiences that whatever journey your'e on so is fiver . The BBC three idents show brightness and is overwhelming because there is so much going on which can show realism but because its so colourful the shows that screen on BBC Three they maybe real but some shows can be seen as 'playing up to the camera' and showing off to make a television programme and to gain more viewers, its similar to E4 idents there is a lot going on you cant just watch it once because everytime you watch it you found and see something new.
The purpose also links to the design of the ident. For example the Sky 1 Simpson special, the Simpsons is one of the biggest programmes on sky one and is very popular, majority of people are familiar on knowing who the characters are in this particular ident there use the characters itchy and scratchy throughout the ident. The humour in the ident pursues and feels like a normal eposide of itchy and scratchy as if it the simpsons are on, so its is keeping to what the audience would expect to see. The humour itself is like a cat catches mouse aspect but in this sense it is completely opposite, so the humour is voilent but intelligent in a sense of the mouse thinking of ideas to try and kill this cat. There is alot of short shots to keep up the speed of the ad to add the race of the survival for the characters and to show excitement in the ident to make it more quirky and different. Also it is there is a very quite tempo when the lazer goes through the Sky one logo. They also use humour to keep the audience watching until the end so that they can show the audience our they are branding and promote there channel to the audience. The logo is right at the end, it isnt in the ident when the action happens, so for the audience they may just think it is just advertising the simpsons until the very end. The slowmotion at the end is very useful as it gives the audience time to see the logo and to listen to the voicever telling you whats up next - which is crucial in an ident because the purpose is to show you what kind of channel and the design shows to visually and so that you can hear what kind of channel it shows. This ident clearly 'promotes and market's the channel' because it uses shows from there channel to be able to gain audiences and also to be able to target the audience which is the main purpose of idents. It also brands the channel as being the main place to find the Simpsons, especially as the Simpsons is a 20th Century Fox production who own Sky. Which of course is the Simpsons and it keeps the audience fully entertained between programmes and fills in the gaps between programmes by being like i said a miniature episode of Itchy and Scratchy and therefore entertaining the audience.' With the simpsons ident the purpose was to rebrand the channel and keep it up to date so they then had to design the simpsons ident so that it was new and fresh for the audience to see and also to celebrating the amount of years that simpsons has been going on for and especially been seen on Sky One for so many years. The purpose is also to represent Sky one channel so with the design it links to be as important as the purpose because it also representation of the channel. The purpose links to design because the purpose of a ident shows the characterstics and style of the design of the channel and its logo and how it is pursued and seen by the audience.
The purpose of an TV Ident is to brand a channel and to make it its own and to identify the channel. Opportunities and Limitations
Within a TV ident there are opportunities and limitations. The purpose of the ident is to create a categorisation which can bring advantages or disadvantages to companies. For example BBC Four, Sky One, BBC Three all have different opportunities and limitations which can be limited or unlimited.
Opportunities within an ident show the true colours of the channel itself, firstly how they are designed, for example BBC Four Rare ident it shows creative visual that will appeal to a target audience by that channel knowing what they like and how creative they like to be. Where else a limitation could be until there audience change then they can't change there way of presenting there identity of there ident. Another opportunities is extending the ident and by doing this they tell a story, for example Sky One The Simpsons anniversary before the show comes on, it tells the audience visual that is 25 years since Simpsons started so therefore the channel will receive more views as it brings excitement onto the channel and the ident, this could be also said for the high production value of the channel and how much they spend on the ident itself, the audience will carry on watching. Where else a limitation could be that audience new to the channel the may not know that they do this type of ident and may not like it because its not what they except or not use to seeing this type of ident because it only happens when there is a special occasion. Also another is programs are based on idents as it shows idenfication on that actual channel. With some idents you get voiceovers, this may help the ident in someway because normally the voiceover is someone popular or well known so if they audience enjoy the person speaking there are going to explore the channel more. For example BBC One Doctor Who David Tennatt says what’s coming up next. Where else a limitation could be finding the right 'celebrity' to talk over the ident, or some viewers may not like a particular 'celebrity' talking. Also there have to find a 'celebrity' who as a clear voice and speaks well so that it attracts more viewers. Another one is idents that specifically shown at a particular time throughout the day, for example BBC One moon ident is shown in the evening where else a more bright ident is shown throughout the day, this is for the channel to know who is about in the day, to try and catch the children that are ill and cant go to school or the older genders that watch TV in the day. Where else a limitation can be that with the same ident happening every day and night the audience may get bored of seeing the same ident everyday and every night. A last opportunity is that technology changes, so for example BBC Four Rare ident its targeting the right audience the channel what’s it to target by producing hi tech visual idents. However a limitation can be that technology changing and the idents being to hi tech that the audience will not understand.
However there are Limitations within an ident, firstly the audience, the channel identity if it’s only making ident for a particular audience, it will have to make idents to target that audience and they wont be able to change the idea of the channel till the audience changes, so for example BBC Four only have a group of viewers that channel will have to keep processing similar idents to keep the target audience happy to make sure they still have viewers, otherwise they aren’t going to watch. However a opportunity can be if the viewers and audience like the ident there a going to watch BBC Four more meaning more money for the BBC, When an ident has hardly any money and it a low budget ident like BBC Four Bookshelf ident compare that to BBC three Ident, viewers are more likely to watch BBC Three for the pure facts there is more interesting things happening within the ident. However a opportunity could be that they audience like more shows that are screening on BBC Four more then BBC Three so there are more likely to turn over to BBC Four. Also this can also be a Limitation because with too much money so many things going on, it can bore viewers because either they don’t understand or it is just way too much, like BBC Three bright colours to much going in within the ident. However this can be an opportunity because it may interest the viewers because every time you watch it you see something different that you may not of seen previously. Also if channel change to much within a ident, viewers may not be happy with it and not watch the channel. However a opportunity can be that it brings more viewers in because they have started to like the difference of the ident and there way it identifies itself.
