PHOTO JOURNALISM - HAROLD MICHAELS
An American photographer called Harold Michaels took this particular photograph, its context is shown in newspapers, this exact photo was shown front page of the New York Times. The agency representing this photo is the New York Times agency. These types of photos that are shown in newspapers are known as photojournalism. The purpose of the photo is to inform us of current events that are happening locally or around the world. There is anchoring shown in the photo, however shown without context but shown with a powerful image of the event that audience will understand from just looking at it. There is a contrast between the explosions and the building making it very uncomfortable for reader to see. CONTEXT. the context of these types of photography newspapers (e.g sun guardian, daily mail) internet news, e.g. yahoo, msn, bbc news. Photojournalism 20 years ago was used with 35mm SLR but now they use digital Camon 5D or 1S there are the most professional keeping up with technology also you can convert them on emails and send them to the news room. This shows that agencies that they are keeping up with the new equipment. Photojournalism can also symbols anything in the news, like sport which is normally positive for example Bradly Wiggins winning Tour De France. Action shot someone taking photos during the race shows excitement and happiness also its located in the mountains which shows that its been taken during the race. However it may not been taking this year, it could symbolise the fact that he has one. The fact also that he is on is own shows that he is winning. Comparing this to the war of 9/11 it shows that news isn't always negative and everyone can celebrate something that is positive weather your english or american. This is also an example on BBC News that the photo is anchored. This is probably not a photo for Tour De France but it is to illustrate the story of him winning. Photjornlism paparazzi, now days news as become 'soft' news the news everyone becomes obsessed with celebrities. Some find it interesting because it makes them happy and interested and the inspire to be a particular celebrity. Some find it boring as some people are not interested with celebrities life, some may argue that they end up in the papers to much and that other more important news that should be front page. However some may argue and say that 'hard' news can be depressing and they need some change of something to read. The positioning of the shot can be wonky or not positioned well because the photos are taking so quick because the paparazzi wanna get the celebrity doing something so they have to be quick. Also its not that hard to get a picture of a celebrity because there are always doing 'something' someone is interested in. For example the picture on the left shows Rihanna walking out of a club and because its paparazzi they have to take it quick so therefore not very professional. Todays newspaper and magazines of celebrities have taken over by deaths and wars. |
Photojournalism becomes somewhat of a documentary because the context changes throughout time because it may end up in a book in a art gallery

PORTRAIT - DAVID BAILEY
David Bailey took this type of photo, you would see this type of photo in a gallery or photography books, the purpose of the photo is to show different emotions within a photo by a famous person or an individual to the viewers. With portrait photos audience can some what relate to it and enjoy the presents of the photos, also if it is a picture of a famous person then people can enjoy looking at the photo, as it maybe there idol etc. It could also document an individual life and express there way of life, so it could be documentary photography using expressions. CONTEXT: Websites, Art Books, Galleries. CONTEXT: Magazines like vogue dazzed and confused, publicity for someones book or website. He is so famous it because his photo. Portrait Photography is to show a portrait of the person famous people it expresses the personality of that person or subject and this can be achieved by the lighting, positions and facial expressions shot in a studio controlled and props. Every photo is going to be a medium close up of the person. For example Jay Z is very dark the emotions are series and the position of jay z with his hands as if he is hiding from something. Also the fact that he shows his watch shows what kind of person he is. The facial expressions show remorse you could say or that he is quite 'vulnerable.' The rick gervais one is very bright in front of a white background, it constructs rickys personality quite well you can see from his face that it is quite humorous but then it has the edited blood which can be shown to be quite serious. I found that Ricky did participate in a charity boxing match, in this sense this photo is photojournalism in that it is telling a story about current affairs. |

Also like Scott Specks photo it could mean something to the photographer something personal. For example the picture is black and white so there is there must be a reason for that they the viewer may not know but somewhat interested in why. Fine Art is pictures to make money and also enjoying and making you think and making you interested. Advertising is so that you can look at it and buy but with fine art it is to interest photo fans and for the viewer to enjoy it and the artist to enjoy producing the photos. Documentary because its real people he uses a SLR 35mm its somewhat like a paparazzi just clicks at every movement here are example of Martin Parr. He uses rich and saturated with hues and bright colours. The photos have a sense of humour with the flag covering the womens face. The flag is in the high ground and the women is in the mid ground making it seem that the flag is on her face. There are very british and english. The beach is trying to be less depressing. context - his own website so that you can buy his books and look through his photos. The camera martin used is 35mm. |
Architecture - Thomas Cummins
|

The purpose of the photo is to advertise a certain place and to make it look nice to the viewers, it’s for travelling uses. It uses anchor in a sense that it shows in picture of how nice the place is without the text, it can leave an open mind for the viewers to what they might think about the place. Also it can show history within the photo as in the future, wherever the place is, may not be there anymore so therefore viewers can learn from what was previously there. |
High Street Photography
|
HIGH STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
High Street Photography, the context is for family uses, like albums so it would be in someone’s house. Percival is a high street photograph shop on which this photo came from, the purpose of the photo is to keep a memory with someone close or to celebrate something special, like birthday, weddings etc. It could also be documentary by documenting part of someone’s life meaning its personal. However pictures like this are shown in shop windows for the public to see, so it’s a type of advertisement to show the public what the shop involves and what its like. |
FASHION/ADVERTISING
|
FASHION/ADVERTISING
Fashion advertising is shown in this photo, its to advertise Diesel, the context of this photo would be seen in a magazine such as mens fashion magazine and/or advertised on a billboard. This kind of adverts are not advertised on the internet. It would be shown in Diesel magazines and Look magazines too. The purpose of the photo it to advertise the company and who they are and what they sell. The anchoring is shown by the logo in the bottom corner but also shown in the picture, with the handsome man and the ‘in fashion’ clothes; viewers know that it is a fashion advertisement. Its a highly contrasted, very professional studio shoot. Its contracting an idea to be able to advertise there brand. There company is high budget and high production which they then can use the best looking people, the best ideas and the editing with high brushed and cropping. Also with the amount of money used, the location of where it needs to be need to be popular. Using a Billboard its nice and big and everyone can see it. if it was in a magazine only the reader would see it. The billboard is anchored by the text on the billboard. |
Documentary - Jason Florio
|
DOCUMENTARY - JASON FLORIO
This photo was taken by Jason Florio the context of the photo is a documentary photography; you would see this photo in photo history books, and holocaust books. Also in museum such as imperial war museum. The older it gets the more like photojournalism. The purpose of this photo is to show history events and to learn from just looking at a photo what it was like back then. It is to show a documentary of life that many, of us would not of lived. The photos as the notion of anchoring just like the photojournalism one, where it shows a powerful image that shows so much but so little was done to help it. it’s a famous image of the holocaust that so many viewers know about and it helps them understand what it was like. There are also like photojournalism but different because it isn't also necessary currently now and it isn't also new worthy. This famous photo after the war this photo was taken and it evidence of the life that happened and it is real life and shocking and the horror of world war 2. |
