VIDEO ARTISTS ESSAYS.
Fiona Tan's Video Installation 'Projection'
Video art has been viewed and experimented for many years, and there have been artists that have used video art to experiment and use different techniques to be able to show off there work. An artist that has experienced the use of this techniques and showing is Fiona Tan and her piece ‘Projection.’ I am going to write about her video art and how it approaches the audience and how well the audience reacts to the installation. I’m also going to write about the techniques and the technology used throughout the installation.
Firstly the ‘Projectors’ installation made by Fiona Tan it is a simple but somewhat ironic portrait of the artist. Tan filmed herself in her studio, projected the moving image onto a white bed sheet and re – filmed this set up. The portrait on the fluttering sheet is diffused and continually disturbed and when projected onto a small free – floating screen in the gallery space the result gives the impression of an optical illusion. The gallery space was rather suitable for this installation because when the sheet was being projected you could go either side, either way you would be able to see the installation and not get in the way of the projection. If audience of today would view this installation there would view it has something strange and unusual, however that is part of video art to be able to explore and experiment on new technology and new art. The technology in this installation is digital because its projecting meaning the brinary code is happening meaning it is sending the 0s and 1s to projector. The audience viewing it has a digital video art, if todays audience viewed the installation they would view it has nothing special because they’ve experienced and they are familiar with digital objects and surroundings. However if this was viewed when video art started with this type of technology and techniques then I believe it would get a better reaction because of the way it is set up and how it is set up, majority of people wouldn’t know what to do or think and people would be more interested. The technology used is a projector; this way of presenting video art is getting common nowadays then it did when it first started. However the projector is the best type of technology for this installation because that fact that they is a bed sheet fluttering if this was on a TV set it wouldn’t get the same output then if it was on a sheet, also it would get a bit boring and repetitive if it was on a TV set, but the fact that it is on a sheet that’s unoriginal and also the fact that the sheet moves someone who is really interested will enjoy it more on a sheet.
The techniques in this installation, firstly Tan uses the sheet to be able to express her video art. This is unoriginal and strange in a sense that video art is normally on a screen projected. However the audience viewing this may enjoy that it is different, they can also feel quite confused in how the sheet Is moving but also how the lady is projected onto the sheet. The next technique is the continually disturbed sheet moving, audience may wonder how the sheet is constantly moving, however this technique catches the audiences eyes so therefore is an advantage to Fiona Tan. The sheet moving is by the pre recording of when Tan was in the studios, so its almost like its double filmed the sheet that is in front of the audiences eyes isn’t actually moving it is the pre recording in the studio, so its like an optical illusion in the installation. Also another technique is the exhibition space the fact that the audience can walk around the installation without getting in the way of the projector. Tan wanted the audience to be able to see the entire sheet because it is only a small exhibition; this allows the audience to explore the whole installation and to be able to understand what Fiona Tan wanted. So these techniques are suitable and understand for this installation and the message Tan wanted to get across which was optical illusion she got a cross to the audience. The installation is single channel meaning it is only on one screen, in this case sheet. Reasons why it is only single channel, this is so that the audience can just concentrate on one thing in the installation. If it was multichannel then that would cause confusion and also it may not give at the same message as if it was single channel, it wouldn’t be that powerful. The audience viewing it as a single installation they would be more understanding and controlled.
The sounding in ‘Projection’ by Fiona Tan, firstly the is non – narrative, there is no story behind the installation apart from wondering how that women was projected like that and how. The audience may view that concept and start thinking why that women on the sheet (Fiona Tan) how she got there in the first place, the fact that it moves can show a way of escaping. The fact that there is no sound can show that Fiona Tan is stuck and there is nothing around. This all comes down to optical illusion to the audience thinking all different and weird things. The content of the installation is the audience so it’s you because of the optical illusion and the thinking the installation of the set up. The audience may react as the installation maybe about them feeling trapped and claustrophobic. If audience sure it when video art first started, they would react weird to what’s going on in the installation but also the way it is set up because they’ve never seen anything projected on a screen let only a sheet.
The cinematography on the installation is a long shot of Fiona Tan in the studio; this still camera long shot is the only shot in the installation. However when it is projected on the sheets it is hard to tell what type of shot it is because of the moving sheets. Then again when looking at the sheet you can see the women standing in the middle with a lot of background space. With the long shot, the audiences are able to see the going on, on the sheet. However when they approach the installation the audience can touch and feel the installation so the shots change in the audience eyes to a close up, however the shot type hasn’t changed just the way the audience view the installation. If the audience viewed this as if it was the start of the installation, talking about shot types they would understand and be able to relate and touch the installation so therefore be more involved.
The editing in this installation, firstly Fiona Tan to be able to show her installation and the type of installation, she had to loop the footage to be able to continue the installation because this then showed the women on the screen repeatedly, otherwise without the loop there would be clear shots of the footage without the artist being there. The audience would react to this if the loop wasn’t there, they’d be confused and wondering what’s going on. If audience saw this when video art first started they would view it has something weird and there’d be questions ask about the technology but also the editing of how the footage become the final piece. The editing of this piece was used on an editing system that is up to date and that has software to be able to edited this type of footage. Another editing is jump, which basically jumps to the next bit of the footage but because it’s the same footage it just jumps and loops until the end of the installation. So the editing system Fiona Tan uses is up to date and also the system that the audience knows what it is and where it comes from. So therefore the editing is always up to date.
The audience that Fiona Tan targets is broadcast and niche audience, which the broadcast is everyone, world wide, however the niche audience is a group of people who enjoy video art and who enjoy Fiona Tans work especially. This is a benefit to the artist and to the audience because firstly with the artist, she supplies for everyone, however of course only get people who are interested, so that audience will respect her work a lot more and enjoy the feel of her work. It is a benefit to the target audience because they get to connect with Fiona Tans work and be able to be inspired by her work and to be able to enjoy it. A down full to having a niche audience is the simple fact that it may only be a small amount of people so therefore the work isn’t that popular and the artist isn’t well known. However this can be a upturn because with just a small amount of people the artist can soon be recognized and more people will come and see their installation and work.

Comparing Sam Taylor - Wood 'Rotten Fruit' to Nam June Paik '50 screens America'
Video art is an art that can be used by technology, still life and performances. There are two artists that use video art in two different ways but are similar in some ways. Those two artists are Sam Taylor - Wood, and Nam - June Paik. These two artists use video art of away of expressing things and showing what they have made and achieved. I am going to compare differences and similarities of each artist, I'm going to compare one video that each artist made.
Sam Taylor - Wood made a video of rotten fruit, the reason she made this still life video was because she is influenced by painting and art. This was filmed in the present in the earlier noughties, it consist of a medium still camera shot of some fruit rotten throughout the days It was in the bowl, this video art is known as being natural and ordinary within the video, however because of what is being filmed there is a odd feel to the fruit rotting. If the audience of today saw this type of video art, they would react as if it was weird for someone to film something that isn’t very interesting and repetitive, however because it was only filmed a few years ago, there would be majority of people for example reformers who are interested in the environment because it is natural ‘life.’ Also the space around the exhibition a screen so that the audience will be able to watch it, so it almost like watching something on TV that its repetitive. The audience of this generation would be the reformers audience they will respect and be interested in what is going on, also the audience of today would see it has old technology and an old installation because even though it was filmed in noughties the technology has upgraded had people of this generation start to get uninterested because the technology is upgrading every year. In this installation the technology is Digital because there is a use of brinary code, which takes analog filming and changes in to 1s and 0s transfers. However audience back in the 80s when Nam June Paik installation was viewed - I believe would respect it a lot more because the fact that a installation has colour would of attracted the 80s audience because they would of never seen anything so powerful and witty and that bizarre to film some fruit rotten. However Nam June Paik made his video on 50 screens all connected together to make the American flag, he made this video because he is interested in video sculptural art. The installation shows parts of the American flag on screens that are vizzy and that change constantly. This video art was made in the 80s when everything was over the top and crazy from outfits to hair and music to art, so to have this installation be made in this time it made Americans feel somewhat proud and honoured to have their flag on 50 screens showing the world. The space around the exhibition for the audience its put on one wall with all 50 TVs, so therefore the space of the installation the audience just stand and watch the tv change throughout the installation. This type of space for the audience is suitable because they can just watch and enjoy the experience; also the fact that the audience doesn’t walk round it so that the audience can concentrate on the actual installation. This type of technology would be Digital because all the is uses of TVs the brinary code is sourcing those out towards the installation. This type of technology for both installation, towards the audience, the audience see it has progress in making new technology for video art installation to improve but they would also see it is has something new and excited that keeps upcoming of new ideas about video art. This two installations are different to each other not because the artists have different types of making art but in a sense of that the way it is filmed Sam's video is of rotting fruit which isn't just a quick film, she must have filmed it for more then a week to be able to achieve the installation, so she had to prepare well on how she was going film the installation and how long for. On the other hand Nam filmed technology uses a lot of technology and thought in how he was going to present the installation, however the similarities would have been the preparation and the effort to make it work and to do it well.
The technique in Nams installation, firstly he uses 50 monitors and screens to be able to show his installation, this is called multichannel meaning the use of more then 1 monitors or screens. He uses this technique to be able to show the audience something new and exciting. Also the use of using more then one screen brings at the installation more, because if he used single channel the reaction from the audience may change, so the use of 50 screens may bring out the excitement in the installation, this generation audience my react as if its nothing special as they are used to TVs and digital technology. However 70s audience may react to it as something special and unique. Another technique he uses is the fact that it is shown on TV screens, shows that it is different to video art when it first started. This technique to this generation audience wont surprise the audience for this type of video art because they are used to seeing action on screen so therefore they know what’s going to happen. The techniques Sam Taylor Wood has on her installation is to use a single channel to present her installation, this is to show in detail the fruit rotten, this is so that the audience see the installation in detail and can relate in what’s going on. In both installations there is no sound or dialogue, it’s a silence installation. This effect can give out the effect that the artist just wants the audiences to concentrate on the viewing of the footage and to b able to enjoy the exhibition, also in Sam Taylor Woods installation the use of sound may ruin the installation because Sam Taylor Wood is showing some sort of life that has been created and is now dying out, so therefore without the sounding, the effect is more powerful. With Nams installation with the sound and dialogue, in the 70s the audiences were more fascinated by what was on the screens that Nams installation was still powerful without any sound on dialogue the audience could appreciate it more.
The cinematography in Sam Taylor Woods installation, it is just a medium still camera throughout the installation. The reason why the camera shot is suitable to this installation is because the audience can see all the action that is happening. However if this generation audience saw this installation with the cinematography they would easily get bored because they are use to more action on screens and more excitement. However audience of the 70s sure this type of installation they would react as if it was a new and exciting exhibition. Again the technology used is digital and artists can do more with it, so the technology has something to do with the graphics and the way it was presented with the camera shots. The Nams installation is a long still camera shot that features 50 other still shots of the American flag. The reason it is still shots is because if they were panning or zooming or long shot or close up then the audience would get confused and wonder what was happening. So with a still shot the audience can see what is happening and what is showing. Also the fact that the 50 screens are showing different colours constantly but have the same shot type in all 50. So in a way the installation is calm in a sense that there isn’t a lot going on just the changing of the flag but in the same shot type.
The editing for Sam Taylor Wood, this installation constant of a few days or week to film, the fact that she had to film the fruit rotten, this had be edited in compressed time because the fact that it was filmed over time to be able to make the installation, the installation would be to long in real time. The footage is also edited in expanded time, for example when the mold is steaming of the fruit it’s all in slow motion. All these editing techniques are so that the audience can view it properly and to be able to understand the installation. Also it is down to the technology, the technology has upgraded so that there are different ways in which an artist can edit. In Nams installation it is all edited in real time, however his editing techniques come from the 50 screen monitors, with the footage changing constantly Nam has used fading and jumping editing to be able to show his installation, these techniques show the excitement of new technology and new editing system to the audience. The audience reactions towards Sam Taylor Wood installation for the editing techniques shows the audience the courage and work that was put into the installation and shows a different side to video art in a sense that it was filmed over a couple of weeks and for the final piece to come out so powerful. Nams installation, the editing techniques, this is more video art because there is very little editing its more to do with the use of technology, however I believe that Nams ideas were to concentrate on the technology and to be able to view the installation as new technology.
The audience in both installations, firstly Sam Taylor Wood the audience targeted is people who is very artistic and enjoy real life art. So therefore it is narrowcasting and a niche audience, meaning that it targets a group of people that enjoy what this installation has. This is benefit because the artist enjoys their fans of their work with their audience and is able to relate to each other about the art and what they enjoy. The Nams installation audience is people from America and who enjoy video art and technology. The video art is broadcast and mass audience, this means that the installation is world - wide and attract majority of people. This is an advantage on the artist because they have attract a massive target audience that enjoy they work and they will be able to connect and understand the video art and thee use of technology in the installation.

Sam Taylor - Wood video installation i had to compare to 50 screens America.
50 screen america - nam june paik this is what i had to compare to Sam Taylor - Wood with.
Comparing Bruce Nauman 'Video Corridor' to Julian Rosefeldt 'American Night'
There are many different ways in how video art is presented and what techniques they use to show different presentations. For example Bruce Nauman ‘Video Corridor.’’ It is filmed in the past, in the 1969/70. This video was made from the performance corridor work group. The video shows a narrow corridor with two monitors at the end of the corridor and someone walking through the corridor towards the monitors. This type of video art is known as the start of the video art, this is when video had just been invented and it was weird to see yourself live on TV, this soon inspired majority of people. Also back on the 60s having a CCTV was something special, because no one had experienced something has weird as seeing you live on TV. However now days they have them everywhere, from shops to airports, everyone knows they are there, so Bruce Nauman was bringing in something that was up to date in his video. In spite of this if the audience of today viewed this installation, they would view it differently because they have experienced and they are familiar with the CCTV, they could also easily get bored because they don’t find it interesting because they know what CCTV is and its purpose. However throughout the years of video art, the changes the qualities of graphics and equipment start to improve and Julian Rosefeldt shows these changes. The technology is Analogue because Digital didn’t start in video art till later on. Also use of projectors, the tape or the source providing the footage is analogue. Projectors show a sign in. However again there was new technology which was the projectors and this is when video art started to become digital. In addition there is better quality in the video because of cheaper projectors, this improvement changed video installation and the way it was viewed. Open fire, this is shown on a projector in a dark room, this gives an effect of being in a cinema, with the screen on the wall, this all of a sudden becomes something new with the video projecting on to the screens. However the set up is different because there is 5 wide screens on one side of the wall, this instantly observes to strangeness because with the showing of 5 screens, the audience doesn’t know where to look or what to do, so therefore the reaction is bizarre. The fact that it is like a cinema layout, when the audience watch it, the fact they more laid back and they just sit in one place for 45 minutes, also the audience if they are not enjoying it or other reasons, they can just stand up and leave, the installation is more for the audience and what they think of it and there decisions towards it.
The technique that Nauman uses in his video is that he is trying to get the audience to feel something towards the video this is where the narrow corridors come into the feeling of being claustrophobic. This technique of making the audience feel something is powerful because it shows that his work can make people feel effected and interested in how he uses that feel to be able to connect with the audience. Also shows effect that as you walk down the corridor, you see yourself from the back, and as you approach the monitor you get further away from the camera so you never really get any closer to “yourself”. The audience that will enjoy this type of installation is an audience that like small spaces and also audiences that feel to learn about the ‘new’ technology from the 60s. However with Julian’s video the techniques she uses is to get the audience to listen to her video because everything said in the video is quoted either from western films, popular films, or political speeches. This gets the audience listening and to understand important issues going on. This approach targets seceeders, people who don’t worry about money enjoy life it also attracts audiences that like the learn about different topics. So the differences in each videos technique are that Nauman uses a more of a present approach by having the feeling approach towards the audience, this is used because the graphics and the equipment is more up to date then Naumans. On the other hand Julian’s video uses the cinema approach to show that it is present and modern, the audience will be more interested because majority of people know the cinema logic. The similarities between the two videos techniques are that they both use there target audiences to having a feeling and an input to what’s going on in there installation do therefore the audience will approve and enjoy more.
The technology they use, firstly Nauman uses technology that will make the audience feel like there being watched. The technology that is used is two monitors (CCTV) that are on top of each other. The bottom monitors shows the corridor, this doesn’t change throughout the video. The top monitor is the CCTV camera this shows the person walking through the narrow corridor, this shot is at a height of about 3 meters, from the entrance corridor. This effect of the monitors being shown is that the audience can see themselves walking through the corridor and they can see themselves from behind, and as you approach the monitors you get further away from the camera, so you cant really get close to “yourself.” With this type of technology, there is a use of confusion especially if some of the audience have not seen this type of technology before practically in this 70s, also the fact that he only uses the CCTV, shows how limited in ideas and thoughts and lack of technology there was in that time. Nevertheless with just the CCTV the audience can feel something in them when being in this sort of installation environment so therefore with only just a small of technology, it can still impact on how well the audience felt after the installation. However Julian’s technology she uses is modern and up to date. She uses a projector with a big screen to show the video, she uses 5 screens, this technology is called multi channel, this will engage the audience to be more interested and to be to connect with the five screens, the technology itself, the fact that the projectors made out to the audience that whatever was shown on those projectors it felt like the audience was at the scene, for example there is a fire lit throughout the installation and the cowboys are all around it, and one of the characters backs are showing the camera so it is like a open fire towards the audience, so you feel the heat and the whole context of the installation, so the technology makes the audience feel what involved and more with it then Nauman. The differences between the both videos are that the technology has aged between them, Nauman uses old CCTV monitors to show a feeling and emotion towards the audience On the other hand Julian’s technology is in ‘fashion’ its smart and the technology is used in installations today, the audience are more keen on knowing more about the newest technology that is coming out then the old fashion 70s technology. The similarities between the two videos technology is that they are used for a reason, for example Naumans use for CCTV monitors is to show everyone a different side to video art and a new sign of technology, this is the same for Julian’s there is a use of new technology that is now used in this generation so therefore in the ages of each video people are interested in what’s going to happen next. Also the fact there their technology is both multi – channel, this can show that from when video art started there was some use of multi channelling throughout.
The sounding in the Nauman installation is silent there is no dialogue, no music, just pure silences. Reasons why the installation is silent because it is one of the first video art installations, so therefore it is very basic and unimaginative, it just shows the uses of the ‘new’ technology that was made. The sounding in Rosefeldt installation, there is no music; however there is a lot of dialogues, just like a movie. So therefore the sounding in both installation show completely different outlook to the audience because both installation shoe different feelings, because with no sound in a claustrophobic installation it shows more of how the audience feel. However with Nauman installation there is a use of knowledge and showing the audience something that is completely new to video art installation, as generation of today would call cinema. So both installation show and make the audience feel something different just because of sounding. However both installation, the narrative, firstly in Nauman installation there is a hidden story because the content of the artwork is yourself because you look at yourself and you see you, however the less away you are the more your not getting closer to ‘yourself’ so it feels like your not getting anywhere and feeling lost. The narrative is present to us because audience of today watching this my feel that they are getting further and further away from themselves and their not sure what to do. In the Rosefeldt installation there is a story of how the cowboys are coping and how the amuse themselves when together. The content of the artwork is about the actors and how well the play and try and convince the audience to believe what they are saying. The narrative is present to us because it shows knowledge in what they are saying, shows facts. Also shows how we react around friends and what we do when we friends, what we talk about, so it shows a different aspect in a sense of every day life.
The cinematography for Nauman’s installation, firstly it starts with a long shot of the corridor and the CCTV computers, it is a still camera throughout the installation, with cuts of medium shots of the CCTV computers with the footage of the previous person walking down the corridor, then the audiences sees the Numan’s point of view while holding the camera of him walking down the narrow corridor. This type of views and shot represent the installation as a personal feeling to the audience, its how the audience responses to the installation. Nauman picked these types of shots, to also show off the new technology and what it does. The camera that was used to film this installation would be a 70s camera that wouldn’t have that good graphics or have different gadgets that modern cameras have today. However Julian Rosefelts installation there are five screens, all five are still projectors that install ate the footage, however the footage has many shots such as long shot, medium long shot, medium shot, close up. However what makes it different to Naumans is that fact that at the start when the audience walks in and sits down the five screens are still and there is no action happening, its just showing of the location. Also the fact that when it starts all five screens are in medium shot or long shots, this two shots are suitable because therefore the audience get to see the location of the footage and are able to understand. It then moves onto the action, however at the start it only shows when screen of action which is the furthest to the left, it then moves onto two screens with action, however at least one action screen is lowering its action so therefore the audience watch the one with more action. The audience may see this installation especially this generation there may see it has a cinema feeling but also are aware that there is many shots and views in the installation and they understand way those shots are taken. However if the 70s audience approached this installation they wouldn’t understand the concept of the different shot types or the way it is laid out.
The editing of Naumans, with the different shot types there are jumps and straight cuts involved in this installation. These editing techniques because in the 70s video art was something new there wasn’t very good editing system so for artist to be able to edit they just used what they had. This came out had noticeable editing with noticeable cuts, for example when the camera is at long shot of the corridor and then cuts to a medium shot of CCTV computer. This was due to lack of good technology. The audience of today would be able to notice the editing errors, however if Nauman was using modern technology of today then there would be no need for dodgy cuts. However if the 70s audience saw this there wouldn’t really care because of the new technology of the CCTV they wouldn’t of been fussed because they would have been to excited about the new technology. However Rosefeldts editing technology has improved from the 70s, however it feels has if he used straight cut and there had been no editing just the camera filming what had been happening and sticking it a film. It had almost been script written for the actors to read off and memorise, just like in films. The editing technology has improved so there is no dodgy editing. The difference in the editing is that Rosefeldt is a lot smoother and it seems there is very little editing, also the audience would see it has a film and not as a installation in this generation. If 70s audience viewed this installation there would be a whole new reaction because they’ve never experienced this type of installation. In Naumans the editing is a lot noticeable because of the technology used, so the audience of this generation would view as unacceptable editing.
The audience in both installation, firstly Nauman’s CCTV installation the audience that this installation reaches out to is narrowcasting audience and in the niche market, meaning the audience is only a small amount of people that enjoy video art and also the video art installation is showing the audience there interest. This is better for the installation because Nauman would rather get people who are interested and enjoy video art then someone who dislikes video art and who are not interested. Julian Rosefeldt installation it is broadcast, however it is niche audience because of the showing of politics and film quotations. A reason why it is broadcast is because it should target wide audiences because of the knowledge that the installation knows, however with the niche audience it targets audience that are interested in politics and films that what to know this information and knowledge so that they are happy knowing these facts. So both installation are different in there audience and who the reach out to, reasons why is because of time differences and generations but also because video art is getting more popular then when it started so more people are willing to watch it.

Bruce Nauman - Video Corridor, i compared this video to 'American Nights' Julian Rosefeldt.
This is 'American Night' Julian Rosefeldt. I am comparing this to 'Video Corridor' Bruce Nauman
These three pictures represent the exhibition with the five screens and the seating around the installation, this is what i wrote about on my essay.
This is the footage of the installation at the actually night, its shows the location and the set up of the phobia night and how the installations were set up.
